Temperatures are rising and if you have planned a trip to the beach for the next few days, please make sure you leave space in your beach bag for sunscreen in addition to flip-flops, sunglasses, a towel and a large umbrella. Of course, daily sun protection is also important because sun exposure not only causes skin aging, deepening of wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, but may also lead to skin cancer. Therefore, it is vital to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, but finding the right sunscreen can be a challenge.
Before we do, there is one very important piece of information you must know. That is to know the label on the sunscreen packaging.
1. UVA and UVB
UVA and UVB are both ultraviolet rays from the sun: UVA is stronger and can reach the dermal layer of the skin, causing skin ageing damage; UVB can reach the superficial layer of the skin and is less penetrating, but can cause dry, itchy, red skin and other symptoms.
2. PA+/PA++/PA+++/PA++++
PA refers to the “sun protection index”, which has a protective effect against UVA. The “+” sign indicates the strength of the sunscreen’s defence against UVB rays, and the more the number of “+”, the stronger the protection effect.
3. SPF15/20/30/50
SPF is the sun protection factor, simply put, it is a multiple of time for the skin to resist UVB and prevent sunburn. And the larger the value, the longer the sun protection time time.
The difference between SPF and PA ratings is that the former is about preventing redness and sunburn, while the latter is about preventing tanning.
How to Choose the Sunscreen Products?
1. Not the higher the SPF value the better the sunscreen.
The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor), the stronger the protection that the product can give. However, if the SPF is too high, the amount of chemical and physical sunscreens contained in the product will also increase, which can be a burden to the skin.
So, for indoor workers, an SPF 15 or SPF 30 sunscreen is sufficient. For outdoor workers, or those who need to play outdoor sports for long periods of time, then a product with a higher SPF (e.g. SPF 50) is safe enough.
One thing to remember here is that fair-skinned people are more likely to get sunburned due to less melanin in their skin.
2. According to different skin types choose different textures of sunscreen.
In a nutshell, choose a sunscreen with a lotion texture for dry skin and a sunscreen with a lotion texture for oily skin.
How Long Can Sunscreen be Stored?
Generally, unopened sunscreens have a shelf life of 2-3 years, while some products can have a shelf life of up to 5 years, as can be seen on the product packaging.
However, we would like to emphasize here that the sunscreen effect decreases over time after opening! With the growth of time, the sunscreens in sunscreens will oxidise and sunscreens that have been opened for 1 year basically have no sunscreen effect and say goodbye to it.
So we want to remind all consumers to use as much sunscreen as possible after opening and to use it as soon as possible, remember to apply sunscreen every day.
